MEET DR OLA OREKUNRIN- CEO OF FLYING DOCTORS NIGERIA

MEET DR OLA OREKUNRIN- CEO OF FLYING DOCTORS NIGERIA

DR Ola Orekunrin is a British-Nigerian medical doctor who founded Flying Doctors Nigeria, West Africa’s first air ambulance service providers.

Ola, who was born and raised in the UK by her foster parents. She graduated as a medical doctor from the University Of York in the UK at the young age of 21 and is a member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.

While she was still in medical school, her younger sister, who had the sickle cell anemia condition, sadly passed away while the family was visiting Nigeria. The death occurred as a result of inefficient medical facilities here in Nigeria and the unavailability of an air ambulance service in the whole of West Africa that could transport her to a well-equipped hospital. The nearest was in South Africa and before the medical team could arrive, Ola’s 12-year-old sister had given up the fight.

Motivated by this death, Orekunrin quit her job at England’s National Health Service and relocated to Lagos, Nigeria where she offered her services to build a better medical system, not just for Nigeria, but for West Africa as a whole. This led to the birth of Flying Doctors Nigeria in 2007, a medical team dedicated to providing critical care via air transportation to both the private and public sectors, to companies and to individuals.

As a helicopter pilot with specialised training in aviation medicine, Ola has taken it upon herself to put both her passion for medicine and flying into good use.

Ola currently resides in Lagos, Nigeria where she is considered a national expert of disaster medicine and pre-hospital care. Her company has been featured on various local TV and radio stations as well as the BBC and CNN.

“Passion is Key”- Says 36-year-old Entrepreneur Who Owns Nigeria’s Second Largest Rice Farm

Rotimi Williams is a 36-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur and rice farmer. The former journalist and banker is the owner of the 45,000 hectares Kereksuk Rice Farm, the 2nd largest commercial rice farm in Nigeria.

Research states that Nigerians consume more than 5 million metric tonnes of rice every year, with a significant portion of its consumption needing to be sourced from imports. His farm, which is situated in Nasarawa state in northern Nigeria, employs more than 600 natives of Nasarawa.

The well-educated entrepreneur was interviewed recently on “Aim Higher Africa Ignite Series” and he was very candid about his light bulb moment, his mistakes, lessons learned and advice for aspiring farmers.

When asked why he decided to become an entrepreneur, he had this to say

“For me, the first thing you have to decide is are you an entrepreneur or a 9-5 person? I realised that I wasn’t comfortable doing the 9-5 job. I always wanted to think outside the box. If you give me an assignment to do if you tell me to do A and I realise that B is the right way to go, I will do B. I got in trouble every time for doing that, so I decided to go out and do my own thing. I needed that freedom. I needed to express myself in doing things I felt was right and that’s how I narrowed it down to agriculture and to rice. You don’t need any special skills, what you need is passion. Because when you get into agriculture, you will face some disappointments but it’s the passion that actually keeps you going. So if you want to go into farming, the passion has to be there before you come up with everything else. The passion is key.”

Want to know more about the lessons he has learned and his advice for aspiring farmers? Watch the video below!

TURNING WASTE TO WEALTH: MEET BILIKIS ADEBIYI-ABIOLA CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF WECYCLERS

TURNING WASTE TO WEALTH: MEET BILIKIS ADEBIYI-ABIOLA CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF WECYCLERS

Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola is the CEO and co-founder of WeCyclers. The company which was founded in 2012, uses low-cost cargo bicycles called WeCycles to provide convenient recycling services to households in slums across Nigeria.

Bilikiss initially developed the idea for her business in the US while studying at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She was also very interested in waste because as a Nigerian, waste is something she saw everywhere and she wanted to solve that problem.

WeCyclers was created out of a need to solve the problem of waste management in Lagos, where only 40 percent of the city’s garbage is collected. Bilikiss is a recipient of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards for Sub-Saharan Africa in 2013 and Sustainia Award in 2014.

WeCyclers is a successful initiative that enables low-income communities in Nigeria to make money from the waste piling up in their streets.  The company deploys a fleet of cargo bicycles to collect and recycle this unmanaged waste in Nigeria’s capital, Lagos.

Every week, these bicycles go around people’s homes picking up a variety of plastics, cans, and sachets. The residents receive points based on the weight of recyclables they collect, which they can redeem for basic food items, consumer electronics, or even cash.
